By January the lake roads around Rhinelander are their own quiet country — blue at six in the morning, snow squeaking underfoot, nothing moving but the trucks. Docks & Props plows through it: driveways and lake lanes opened, steps and walkways shoveled, salt and sand laid down where shade keeps a slick spot alive, and the banks pushed back so the next storm has somewhere to go. Northwoods winter doesn't arrive in one piece; it arrives in twenty, and the work is showing up for each of them. The good part is a driveway already clear when somebody lifts the shade at dawn. Rhinelander, Newbold, McNaughton and the Thunder Lake roads are all on the run.
