On cold mornings the Wisconsin River exhales over Port Edwards, and the fog hangs above the dam while the village stays hushed under new snow. Edwards Outdoor Service is out in that hush, plowing driveways along the river blocks and the streets of a place that grew up around its mill. There is a particular satisfaction in beating the school buses: blades down before first light, banks knocked back, sidewalks opened so the day can start on time. When the wind stacks drifts along Nepco Lake and out toward the cranberry country, the trucks just make another pass. It is winter work in a river town, done so nobody has to think twice about the weather between the door and the road.
