Ryan's Rec and Service

About Ryan's Rec and Service

Phelps sits on the shore of North Twin Lake in Vilas County, close enough to the Michigan line that winter arrives early and stays a good long while. Ryan's Rec and Service clears snow through the heart of that season, plowing driveways so cabins, homes and storefronts stay open to the road. When the lake freezes over and the trails fill with snowmobiles, the snow on the ground can reach knee-deep and keep climbing, and staying ahead of it means returning storm after storm. There is deep satisfaction in a drive carved out between tall banks, the pavement dark against all that white. On a bright, bitter morning, with sun glancing off the lake ice, an open lane feels like a welcome.
