When arctic air spills south across Langlade County, the Town of Norwood can sit below zero for days, the snow dry and fine as sugar and the wind carving it into drifts across open fields. Polar Vortex takes its name from exactly that kind of weather, and its business is snow removal. A single night of blowing snow can bury a country drive without a trace, and opening it back up is cold, honest work begun in the dark. Exhaust hangs in the frozen air while the blade bites down toward gravel or pavement. When the sun finally climbs into a hard blue sky, the way out is open, even with the thermometer still sulking below zero.
