Blue Mound stands up out of the farmland west of Mount Horeb, and when January wind comes off it the snow does not so much fall as travel. Farrell's Plowing runs before daylight, opening driveways and lots while the village is still dark and the county rigs are still working the ridge highways. Some storms take one pass and some take three, because a field-edge drive fills back in almost as fast as the blade clears it. Shovel work finishes what steel cannot reach — the steps, the walk, the strip behind the mailbox — and salt goes down where the slope would otherwise glaze. By the time headlights start moving along Main Street, the way out is open. That is the whole of it, storm after storm, through Mount Horeb and the villages west.
