About Northwoods Home Services

Three in the morning on a county trunk road out of Minocqua: headlights, falling snow, and nothing awake but the plow. Northwoods Home Services runs those hours so a driveway stands open when the alarm goes off — pushed back to the pavement, walks cleared, ice knocked down with salt and sand at the door and along the step. Storms here come off the lakes and camp for a day and a half, which means the route gets run more than once and the banks get shoved back to leave the next one somewhere to go. The finished version is a plain pleasure: dark asphalt, square corners, a clean path to the car. The town wakes up and the night's work is simply the way things are.
