There is a moment in late August, once the air finally dries out, when a mowed lawn holds its stripes like something combed. The Groundskeeper works toward that moment on properties around Minocqua: even height, a clean pass along every bed and post, string trimming where a mower cannot reach, and edges cut so the grass stops exactly where it ought to. Northwoods yards are irregular by nature — pines standing in the middle of things, sandy patches, ground that tilts toward water. Making all of it read as one continuous, tended piece of green takes an eye, and that is the part of the work worth taking seriously. Cleanups at either end of the year bracket the season, so the lawn begins clear and finishes clear.
