Spring reaches Milton from the fields first — snowmelt running along the ditches, the farmland south of town going dark and wet while the yards are still gray. Nate's Landscaping starts then, with cleanups and the first cuts, and doesn't really stop until the last driveway is plowed sometime in March. In between there is mowing, trimming, leaf season, and the long white months when the plow makes its rounds after supper, clearing driveways before the night hardens them to ice. It is outdoor work in a town small enough that the results are personal: this lawn, that driveway, the neighbor who waves. Nate's keeps it all in order, one season handing off to the next.
