Saarnio & Son Stump Grinding

About Saarnio & Son Stump Grinding

Autumn arrives early in this corner of Iron County: the tamaracks along the bog edges burn out gold and the flowage water goes black and still. Saarnio & Son Stump Grinding works after the first hard frost as gladly as in June, dropping a tree that has gone hollow, trimming back whatever crowds a cabin roof, then grinding the stump down until nothing is left but soft ground and a ring of chips. That last part is what people remember — the mower goes over it, the grass closes in, and by next season nobody can say where it stood. Around here the lots are carved out of thick woods, so making room is half the job and doing it without tearing up the moss is the other half. It is unhurried work in a stretch of country where the nearest neighbor is often a quarter mile of birch away.
