Joe's Excavating

About Joe's Excavating

There is a stretch of June in Mercer when the light holds past nine, and a yard mowed in that long blue hour still looks new at breakfast. Joe's Excavating spends those evenings on the mower — cutting, trimming to the edge of the birch line, clearing away the litter a Northwoods spring drops across a lawn. The ground here is glacial and stony and rolls where it likes, so mowing well is partly reading the land and partly knowing which corner turns soft after rain. Cleanups bracket the year: one when the snow finally lets go in April, one when the maples give it all up in October. Between those two the aim is simple — grass that looks deliberate, right up to where the woods take over.
