At Lime Kiln Park the old stone kilns stand into the bluff above the Menomonee, cool and mossy, built to burn the local limestone down to lime. Kringel Landscape Management works the neighborhoods around that bend in the river. October afternoons there are all blowers and full tarps — leaves off the turf and out of the beds, the lawn taken short and clean for its last cut until April. Then the plows go on and the winter route begins: driveways opened, walks cleared, ice knocked down before anyone is out walking on it. Tending ground here means knowing which week everything changes, and being ready a few days ahead of it.
