The Gofer Guys

About The Gofer Guys

When a storm shuts down the Dells, the highway signs go dark and the village gets quieter than it ever manages in August. That is when The Gofer Guys are out: plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks, cutting through the ridge the county plow leaves across the end of a drive, salting where ice sets up in the shade. Snow out of the west comes wet and heavy or dry and drifting, and each kind asks for a different pass. Nobody watches the work happen; they see the result at six in the morning, black pavement where four inches used to be. Then the trucks head for the next one while the sky is still deciding what to do.
