About Lawn Keepers

September arrives gently in the Pike River bottoms, where the oaks in Petrifying Springs go bronze a few weeks ahead of everything else. Lawn Keepers tends the shaded, root-laced lawns near that park and the wide sunny ones out past it, and knows the two want different things. Mowing height is set to the season rather than the calendar, trimming keeps the edges honest around trunks and fence lines, and fall cleanups pull the leaf load off before it can mat down. Keeping is the right word for the job — not a rescue, just steady attention that never lets a yard get away. By the first hard frost the grass has been handed into winter in good order.
