The Willow River comes down through its gorge northeast of town and runs on to meet the St. Croix, and Willow River Company takes its name from that water. Spring here is quick — the melt pours off the high ground in about a week, the valley goes green almost overnight, and the mowers, trimmers and cleanup crews follow it. Autumn moves slower, all last cuts and leaves piled at the curb, until the falls stiffen into ice and the plow blade goes back on. Working both halves of the calendar means knowing the same driveway in July and in January: where it drains, where it drifts, where the salt needs to land. Hudson is the center of it, with yards and drives cared for in North Hudson, Star Prairie, New Richmond and Somerset.
