February on the south shore of Lake Winnebago arrives with a wind that has crossed miles of open ice before it ever reaches a driveway in Fond du Lac. Team Snow works the hours before that wind meets the morning commute — blades down on the Main Street lots, walkways taken back to the concrete, salt laid where the afternoon melt will lock up again by dusk. Storms here do not announce themselves politely; they come sideways off the water and pile against anything that stands still. There is a particular satisfaction in a lot that looks like the weather never touched it, banked square at the edges while the spearing shanties are still dark out on the lake. Clearing snow is a promise about tomorrow morning, kept at three a.m. so that nobody has to think about it at seven.
