Near the top of the Door peninsula, winter comes off the water sideways — the wind crossing Green Bay picks up snow and lays it thick across Ellison Bay's cedar-lined lanes and shoreline drives. J F Construction spends the cold months pushing back, plowing and clearing for the year-round houses and the closed-up cottages that still need their access kept open. Up here past Sister Bay the plow routes thin out, and a local outfit that answers its phone matters more than anywhere else in the county. Construction season teaches the ground; winter season uses that knowledge, storm after storm. When the lane to the water is open and the bank is cut back square against the cedars, the peninsula feels like home again instead of an outpost.
