By October the Walworth County Fairgrounds have gone quiet again, the midway grass flattened and slowly standing back up, and Elkhorn turns the color of the oaks on the south edge of town. Seeley Seasonal Services spends those weeks on lawns — the last cuts of the year, trimming and edging held sharp while the light shortens, leaves gathered off before the first hard freeze pins them down. There is real pleasure in a yard raked bare in November with nothing on it but turf and low sun. Come the thaw the same lawns are opened back up and mowed on a steady schedule again. The work runs across Elkhorn and the towns nearby.
