West wind carries Lake Michigan snow well inland, and by the time it reaches Nelson Township it comes in bands that can lay down four inches while you are eating dinner. Nelson & Sons runs plows through that, clearing drives, lots and turnarounds across the north end of Kent County. Long two-track driveways, gravel that cannot be scraped to bare pavement, mailbox posts and culvert ends buried under the drift — every property gets learned once and remembered after. Salt and sand go where the grade tips toward a road, and the piles are set so a March thaw runs off instead of flooding the drive. Getting somebody out to work at five in the morning, on a road nobody has touched yet, is a quiet kind of good work.
