The Glacial Drumlin Trail leaves Cottage Grove on an old rail bed, straight as a ruled line through fields that go white by December. Blizzard Services works that same country in the dark hours, plowing driveways and lots before the first commuters roll west toward Madison. There is a plain satisfaction in a finished pass: asphalt showing black, banks squared off, walks salted and safe underfoot. Snow here comes on a hard west wind and keeps drifting long after the sky clears, so the work gets measured in returns as much as in inches. By the time the drumlins turn pink at sunrise, the village is open again.
