Head north out of Boulder Junction toward Winchester and the roads thin into gravel two-tracks that run a quarter mile back through jack pine before they reach a door. Those are the drives that fill first and drift worst, and they are the ones S&D Excavating opens — heavy iron, wide blades, enough reach to carry a season's worth of snow well off the shoulders without chewing up the edge of the road. Out here a driveway is also the only way a propane truck or an ambulance gets in, so making it wide matters as much as making it clear. There is a particular quiet once a machine has been through: the surface cut down to gravel, the piles set back in the brush, tracks running out to the county road. Five feet of snow will come down before March. All of it has to go somewhere.
