The Lawn People

About The Lawn People

Come June the evening light stretches out long and level over the ball diamond and the front yards on the village streets, and somewhere in town somebody is always mowing. The Lawn People are part of that sound — cutting, trimming, edging and clearing the yard debris that gathers in the corners, house by house across Black Creek and the farm roads that run out from it. Grass here grows hard and fast once the nights warm up, so the week has a rhythm to it and the rhythm is the job. What gets remembered is the finish: a crisp line where lawn meets sidewalk, and a yard a kid can be turned loose in. Spring opening and fall closing bracket the season on either end.
