Somewhere in the second week of October the old maples over Beloit's east-side blocks all decide at once, and by Saturday morning every lawn near the college green has gone gold to the property line. Quality Lawn spends those mornings ahead of the wind — deck down, leaves gathered and hauled, turf uncovered again before the wet sets in and mats it flat. The rest of the year is the rhythm of it: cutting on schedule, running the fence lines, keeping the edges honest where grass wants to creep onto the walk. There's something satisfying about a cleared yard under bare branches, still holding its color into November. Beloit lawns will do that, if somebody stays with them.
