Once Lake Winnebago locks up in January, the wind coming off all that flat ice reaches Appleton with nothing left to slow it down. Snowscapes works inside that wind — plowing lots, opening drives, cutting sidewalks back to concrete while the blowing snow tries to fill them in again. February is the long month, shanties out on the lake, the banks along the streets gone the color of old pewter. Salt goes down where afternoon melt refreezes at dusk. Come morning the lot is open and nobody has to think about it, which is the entire point of the night before.
