A clipper drops down out of Alberta and reaches Appleton in the middle of the night, quiet as anything, laying three inches on Oneida Street while the town sleeps. Rock Solid Snow Plowing is out in it at two in the morning, headlights full of falling flakes and the blade already down. The aim is simple and hard to hit: a driveway open and salted before the first alarm goes off, so somebody's morning gets to be ordinary. Windrows come off the apron and the mailbox too, not left in a heap for the homeowner to fight at dawn. Kaukauna, Little Chute, Grand Chute — one storm hits them all at once, and the route runs until it's finished.
