The Fox runs north through Appleton, which surprises people who assume every river heads for the sea the short way. Parm's Landscape Management keeps lawns along that contrary current — the terraced yards above Telulah Park, the flat green blocks stretching out toward Grand Chute. Work starts early here, while the grass is still bent with dew and the mower leaves a dark stripe behind it. A yard cut and edged clean has a particular Wisconsin dignity to it: nothing showy, just lines that hold. By evening the clippings are off the walk and the lawn looks like someone tended it on purpose.
