This corner of Wisconsin refuses to lie flat — coulees fold down toward the Eau Claire River and half the yards in town carry a grade. Matt's Landscaping works with it: mowing across the slope, trimming the banks a deck can't safely take, edging where a drive cuts into the hill, and cleaning up each spring and fall. In winter that same pitch becomes the whole problem, so plowing here is about where the snow goes as much as where it came from, with walks opened and ice treated on the steep approaches. Autumn is the handoff — leaves one week, a skiff of snow the next, sometimes both before lunch. Altoona is home, with work in Eau Claire, Lake Hallie and Fall Creek.
