When a lake-effect band sets up over Algoma, the snow comes in sideways off the water and the red pierhead light disappears into the white. Neveau's Outdoor Services plows through it — driveways, walks, and lots cleared in the dark hours so this harbor town can open on time. Snow off Lake Michigan falls heavy and wet and refreezes fast in the wind, so salt goes down while the pavement is still warm from the blade. From the streets above the marina out toward Casco and Luxemburg, the routes run until the storm quits. Then the light shows red again over a clean white town.
