Where Yelm's oak prairie gives way to fir timber at the edges of town, a wet snow bends a branch low enough to touch a fence line, and that's the kind of weather Shepherd's Tree Service and Excavation watches for. Trees are the main business, so a storm here means checking limbs over driveways and rooflines before it means clearing the ground underneath them, and the crew does both in the same visit. Excavation work through the rest of the year has them already running loaders and skid steers across half the properties they plow, cutting driveways through the same timbered lots they now clear of snow. Prairie mornings after a storm bring a stillness particular to Yelm — no wind off the coast to shake the trees loose, just the weight sitting quiet under a low gray sky until the crew arrives. Shepherd's clears driveways and yards and checks for hanging limbs on wooded properties around Yelm, treating the trees and the ground beneath them as one job.
