Yelm sits on glacial outwash — gravel under a thin skin of soil — and by mid-July a lawn here will tell you exactly how much water it has been getting. The Irrigation Company mows through that dry stretch with the deck set high, because in this ground the grass shades its own roots or it browns out. Every visit still ends the same way: trimmed tight along the fence and the foundation, edges cut where turf meets pavement, clippings cleared off the concrete. When the marine air finally slides in off the Sound at the end of a hot week, the prairie cools fast and the whole town's lawns green up overnight. Timing the work to that rhythm is most of the craft.
