East of Yakima in Moxee, the hop yards stand bare and wire-strung through winter, tall trellis poles marking off fields that will be green and climbing again by summer. Uribe's Tree Service works the farm roads between those fields when a rare snow drops over the valley, clearing driveways that run past the old hop kilns still standing at the edge of a few properties. The trellis wire holds almost no snow itself, but the ground beneath freezes hard and uneven, so the crew works the blade low and careful to keep from catching a wire anchor buried under the drift. Homes closer to the center of Moxee get cleared next, short driveways and walkways scraped down while the kilns' peaked roofs still hold their thin white coating longest in the shade. The farm roads go back to dark gravel fast out here, hop poles standing bare against a sky that clears to blue quicker than the valley floor does.
