Downtown Yakima keeps its old bones, the Capitol Theatre marquee, the brick front of the Larson Building, storefronts along Yakima Avenue that have watched the valley grow up around them. Landscaping & Design tends the planters and street trees along those blocks come spring and summer, and when a downtown snow does gather on the sidewalks, the same crew is out early clearing a path past the shop entrances before the avenue wakes up. The work moves storefront to storefront, blade and shovel both, because the sidewalks downtown are narrow enough that a truck can only do half the job. Once the avenue is clear, the crew heads out to the residential blocks nearby, driveways and front walks scraped down while the frost still holds on the north-facing lawns. There's something satisfying about a clean sidewalk running the length of an old brick block, snow banked neatly at the curb under a marquee that still lights up over the avenue after dark.
