From up on Terrace Heights, the bluff on Yakima's east side, a winter storm looks different than it does down in the valley: the wind has more room to run up there, and what falls tends to drift hard against anything standing in its way. DPR Contracting works the driveways along the rim first, where the view drops away to the river bend and the whole valley floor below, because those are the properties that catch the worst of the drift. From there the crew works its way down the grade into the lower streets, clearing switchback driveways one at a time as the wind eases off with the elevation. Commercial stops along the way, small offices, a strip of shops near the top of the hill, get their lots scraped clean before the workday starts. The bluff itself often holds onto a breeze cold enough to keep a little snow around well after the valley below has already gone bare.
