East of Yakima, where the orchard rows run out toward Moxee and Wapato under lines of tall Lombardy poplars planted as windbreaks, winter arrives dry most years but bites hard when a cold snap drops out of the Cascades. Big R Tree Service works those orchard access roads first, clearing the packed dirt and gravel lanes so pickers and pruning crews can still get equipment out before the ground fully freezes. The poplars themselves hold little snow, but the low sun off the valley floor throws long blue shadows across the cleared lanes by midmorning, the kind of light that only shows up in the rain shadow east of the mountains. Closer to town, the crew turns to home driveways and short walkways, working quick and low so the ice doesn't get a chance to set before the next truck comes through. A cleared lane between rows of dormant fruit trees, out here, is its own kind of reward.
