Under the firs on Washougal's shaded north sides, the lawns keep a green with more moss in it than anyone admits, and by October the drizzle has settled in for the duration. Regenerate Garden Design works with that reality — mowing while the grass still moves, raising the cut for the low light, edging and trimming, and clearing leaves before they smother the turf. Fall lawn care in the shade of Douglas fir is patient work, mostly a matter of not letting things get away. On the first bright morning in November, a lawn that has been kept is unmistakable beside one that hasn't. Rain, then more rain, then a cut lawn holding its color right into winter.
