In Wapato the day starts before the heat does, when the irrigation lines are still ticking and Toppenish Ridge is only a long blue shape to the south. Greenlife landscape keeps lawns green in a valley that would rather be sagebrush — mowing on a steady rotation, edging walks and drives, trimming the corners a mower can never quite reach. Water is the whole argument out here, and a yard that holds its color through August is the answer to it. Late in the day the light comes gold across the hop fields and every freshly cut lawn on the street takes it a little differently. Mount Adams stands white in the west long after the grass has gone to shadow.
