Where Walla Walla's valley floor starts to lift into the first timbered foothills of the Blue Mountains, the properties get fewer and the trees get taller, ponderosa pine standing where the wheat fields leave off. Timberland Tree Service works those foothill lots, clearing driveways cut through timber and the limbs that come down when snow catches pine boughs that never quite lost their needles. Cold air slides downhill into these upper properties well before it ever reaches the valley floor, so a foothill driveway can be iced over hours before anyone in town notices weather at all. Opening a route back to one of these homes means working through timber the whole way, snow and downed branches both, until the driveway finally meets pavement. Up here, winter shows up earlier in the morning and holds on longer into the day than it does anywhere closer to town.
