On the older residential streets near Whitman College, porches sit close to the sidewalk and driveways are short enough that a single overnight snow can bury a car to the bumper by the time the school bus comes through. Mentzer Family Construction clears those driveways early, working block by block before the buses start their route and before anyone needs to back out onto a street still glazed from the night before. These are narrow lots, tree-lined and close together, and a plowed street doesn't always mean a clear driveway behind it. Getting both done in the same pass, walk and drive, is the difference between a normal Tuesday morning and one spent chipping ice off a windshield instead. Most of the block is still asleep by the time the last driveway on the street gets its turn.
