Outside Walla Walla, the wheat fields run flat to the horizon until they meet the first rise of the Blue Mountains, broken up by grain silos and the long gravel lanes leading back to farmhouses. A N K Excavation clears those lanes when a cold snap off the mountains brings snow down into the valley, opening a route from the county road to the silo yard so grain trucks and family alike can still get through. The stubble left from harvest catches drifting snow in long ridges along the fence lines, and a lane that looks clear at the road can still be buried a quarter mile back. Running equipment built for moving earth, they push that snow the same way they'd grade a new farm road, wide and level enough to drive safely in the dark. Out here, a passable lane in January is as much a part of the farm as the silo at the end of it.
