Vashon's interior is thick with second-growth fir and hemlock, and heavy wet snow bends those crowns low enough to block the access roads cut through them. Island Forestry clears those roads first, the timber lanes and driveways tunneled through trees, so any branch that does come down gets moved before it traps a car overnight. Snow this far south of the Cascades rarely lasts, but the low, heavy kind that Puget Sound throws off can be some of the hardest to shift, wet clear through to the gravel. Working from the forest interior outward, they open a path tree by tree until daylight reaches the ground again in patches through the canopy. Most winters this is over in a week; the point is being ready for the one storm that isn't.
