Vashon's back roads run for miles between fir stands before they ever meet the highway, and when snow catches those gravel lanes, they can stay closed longer than anyone in town expects. Greentree Dozing pushes that snow off the long stretches, the unpaved lanes threading past pasture and timber lots on the island's quieter west side, so trucks and school buses can get through. The work often starts before light, blade scraping frozen gravel loose under a sky still full of stars and fir branches sagging white overhead. There's a particular satisfaction in opening a mile of buried lane and watching the first car of the morning finally make it past the spot where it always used to get stuck. By the time traffic picks up on the highway near the island's center, the back roads are passable, ruts and all.
