On a July evening the light off the Columbia comes in low and long, and the lawns above the Renaissance Trail hold their warmth well past supper. Zavala's Landscape Services keeps the mowers moving through those hours — cutting, edging, trimming out fence lines and bed borders, then clearing the clippings so a place looks settled by dusk. Vancouver's dry season asks a lot of a lawn; the summer here will turn a yard gold if you let it, and a patient cut height is half of what keeps one green from Esther Short Park out to Cascade Park. Come October the rain returns and the leaves fall all at once, and the cleanup work begins again. It is plain work, made to be looked at: the crisp border, the even stripe, a front yard somebody is glad to pull up to.
