East of Vancouver the ground starts to climb toward Lacamas and the low hills above Camas and Washougal, and that little bit of elevation is enough to hold snow on the gravel roads and long driveways up there well after the flats along the Columbia have gone back to rain. Watson Excavation & Earth Works runs the same loaders and graders up those grades in winter that clear building sites the rest of the year, because a machine built to move earth on a hillside is also the right machine to move snow off one. The company takes on the long rural driveways and access roads that a smaller plow truck would struggle with, cutting through drifts packed by wind off the ridge before a delivery truck needs the road. It is quiet, physical work done at first light, more often in December fog than in a real snowstorm, but the hills east of town ask for it most winters regardless. Watson treats a snowed-in gravel road the same as any other piece of ground that needs opening up.
