In June the light over Esther Short Park holds on past nine o'clock, and the grass keeps growing right through the long evening. GRO works those stretched weeks the way a farm works a harvest — cut, edge, trim the fence lines, sweep the walk, then on to the next yard while the sky is still open. The name is short because the job is: keep a lawn growing and keep it in bounds. Coming back on a steady rhythm is what makes the difference, because in this valley a week of rain and warmth can put four inches on a yard that looked fine on Friday. From downtown blocks to the newer streets east of Andresen, the goal is the same one every time the truck pulls away.
