The Twisp River comes tumbling out of the high country to meet the town that shares its name, and in early summer it runs high and milky with snowmelt between banks of willow. Mc Hugh's Excavating works in Twisp at both ends of the job: the heavy lifting of excavation and the lighter rhythm of mowing and trimming. Both aim at the same result, a property that sits level, sheds water where it should and looks finished from the road. Here the soil is part river cobble and part glacial sand, so getting the earth right comes before any lawn can thrive. What is left when the job is done is ground you can build a summer on.
