South of the capitol dome, Tumwater flattens out into the open ground of Bush Prairie, where newer neighborhoods sit on land that was oak savanna before it was anything else. Nasim Landscape tends the yards and walkways across that open ground, and a cold snap here shows up differently than it does closer to the falls — flatter, windier, quicker to ice over on an exposed driveway. Clearing a walk down to bare concrete on one of these prairie streets means working against a wind that has nothing to break it before it reaches a front porch. Real snow is uncommon enough in this part of Thurston County that most years pass without much need for it, but the work is ready whenever a storm does reach this far south. It's prairie-edge work, plain and direct, in a part of Tumwater built on ground flatter and older than the falls it's named for.
