The blocks above the Stadium District climb hard, and the lawns up there arrive in terraces — stone walls and short green shelves stacked above the street. Highland home works that pitched Tacoma ground: mowing the slopes, edging along old concrete stairs, trimming what no mower will ever reach, cutting hedges level in spite of the grade, weeding beds and clearing the whole property down to clean lines. On a hillside every mistake shows, and every straight cut shows twice as well. Winter here rarely halts the growing; it only slows it down and adds moss to the argument. From the sidewalk below, a terraced yard held tight and even makes the house look like it is standing up straighter.
