By late May the Tacoma evenings stretch out past nine, and the lawns in the blocks around Wright Park fill with people who want grass worth sitting on. Alvin's Landscaping keeps those yards to a weekly line — mowing, edging the walks and driveway aprons, trimming the fence lines, cutting hedges back off the porch rails, clearing the beds so the old plantings can breathe. Under the big park maples the turf grows thin and mossy, so part of the craft is knowing which patch needs a cut and which needs coaxing. Nothing dramatic happens; the street simply looks tended, from the sidewalk to the back gate. That is the whole ambition, and on a warm Tacoma evening it is plenty.
