Where the Sultan River comes down out of its own valley to meet the Skykomish, the town it's named for sends a steady stream of commuters up US 2 every winter morning, some bound for work in Monroe, some hauling gear up toward Stevens Pass for a day on the mountain. Twin Pines gets to those driveways before that traffic starts, clearing the wooded lots that back up against the two namesake pines out front and the acreage properties strung along the river road. A Sultan winter morning smells like wet cedar and woodsmoke, with fog still sitting low over the river while the plow truck works the gravel and paved drives alike. Every property here has its own mix of surfaces — a paved pad by the garage, a long gravel stretch out to the road — and the crew treats each the way it needs, not the way the truck would prefer. By the time the sun's actually up over the ridge, the driveway's clear enough for the drive to Monroe or the longer haul up toward the pass.
