Kendall Yards sits right against the river on the north bank, close enough that porch lights catch on the ice some evenings. Lawrence Landscape and Sprinklers times its later plowing runs through there to reach the walkways before the dinner crowd heads out to the restaurants along the row. The bank slopes down toward the water in places, and a walkway left icy there is a different problem than one on flat ground, so the crew salts those runs heavier and earlier. Below, the river keeps moving dark and open even in the coldest weeks, steam rising faintly off it into the evening air. The last walk gets cleared just as the restaurant windows start to glow, snow banked neatly to either side of a path meant for people walking, not driving.
