South and west of the city, where the road climbs onto open ground toward Cheney, Landsite Development Inc plows the driveways and gravel pads of building sites still waiting on their first tenant. The crew works through the middle of the day, when the light is flattest and a hidden curb or survey stake is easiest to see before a blade catches it. Out there the ground is still raw, graded but not landscaped, and the snow lies over it in one unbroken sheet until the plow draws the first lines. Clearing an access road to a site with nothing built on it yet is its own kind of patience, work done for whoever moves in next rather than for anyone waiting today. When the wind picks up over that open prairie, the crew just widens the pass and keeps going.
